Air conditioning does something to ductwork that heating does not: it makes surfaces cold, and cold surfaces in humid air collect moisture. Add the dust that circulates all summer with the windows shut and the fan running, and by late August the inside of a duct system looks quite different from how it looked in May. What accumulates over a cooling season
- Settled dust and skin cells in the horizontal runs, heaviest near the returns.
- Pet hair and dander, which cling to duct seams and to the blower wheel in particular.

Damp dust behaves differently from dry dust: it sticks, it does not move along with the airflow, and it can support growth. Being straight about what duct cleaning does
It removes accumulated debris from the duct interiors, registers, and returns. What it is not is a cure for allergies, a substitute for changing filters, or a way to fix a system with a moisture problem it will simply recreate. Why the timing works
Late summer sits between the cooling season that loaded the ducts and the heating season that will push everything in them around the house. Cleaning now means the first weeks of furnace operation are not redistributing a summer’s accumulation through every room. It also lands before our fall calendar fills.
What to do between visits
Change filters on the manufacturer’s schedule rather than by eye, keep supply registers unblocked by furniture and rugs, vacuum the return grilles, and keep the area around the indoor unit clear. If the same room is always dusty, or registers show visible buildup, mention it — that pattern points to a specific branch.
