Before the chimney: the open hearth

For most of human history there was no chimney at all. Homes were built around an open central hearth — a fire in the middle of the room — and the smoke simply rose and escaped through a hole or vent in the roof. It heated the space, but it filled the room with smoke and soot, and it limited a building to essentially one large communal hall.

The Romans went further than most with heating. Their hypocaust, used from around two thousand years ago, is one of the earliest known forms of ducted heating: a furnace pushed hot air and gases through open spaces beneath raised floors and inside hollow walls, warming the rooms above. It was, in effect, an ancestor of the ducted central heating we use today — though it disappeared with the Roman world and was not matched again for many centuries.

The chimney arrives: 12th-century Europe

The recognizable chimney — a masonry flue that draws smoke up and vents it clear of the roof — emerged in medieval Europe in the 12th century. In the mid-1100s, English and French nobles and wealthy townspeople began constructing castles and stone houses fitted with proper fireplaces and flues.

This was a bigger change than it sounds. Once smoke could be channelled up a dedicated flue, a building could have several fireplaces in separate rooms instead of one smoky central fire. That single innovation made private rooms and upper floors practical, and it quietly reshaped how homes — and households — were arranged.

Early chimneys were built from stone, and later brick. The flue was the critical part, and over time it was lined to protect the surrounding masonry and to give the smoke a clean path — traditionally with clay tiles, and in the modern era often with stainless steel. The systems we reline and repair today are direct descendants of those medieval flues.

The fireplace perfected: Count Rumford, 1790s

For centuries fireplaces were smoky and inefficient — most of their heat went straight up the chimney. The great leap came from Sir Benjamin Thompson, known as Count Rumford, a physicist who studied how fires actually behaved.

In the 1790s, Rumford redesigned the fireplace around a few precise ideas: a tall, shallow firebox with angled sides that reflect radiant heat out into the room, and a streamlined throat that carries smoke away with minimal turbulence and minimal loss of heated air. His “Rumford fireplace” was so obviously better that it became state-of-the-art worldwide almost immediately. Remarkably, his principles about firebox shape and draft still inform how good fireplaces are built and evaluated today.

The story of air ducts is really the story of central heating. After the Roman hypocaust faded, distributing warmth through a whole building remained difficult for a very long time. The modern answer took shape in the early 20th century.

A key figure is Alice H. Parker, an American inventor who was granted U.S. Patent No. 1,325,905 on December 23, 1919 for a natural-gas “heating furnace.” Her design used a heat exchanger to warm air from burning natural gas and then distributed that warm air through ductwork running throughout the house. It is widely credited as the first central-heating design to use natural gas rather than coal or wood, and as a foundation of the modern HVAC systems now in nearly every home.

The ducts themselves evolved with the technology. Where the Romans used masonry passages, modern forced-air systems use galvanized sheet metal, along with flexible metal duct and insulated duct board. Those ducts — and the related exhaust systems like dryer vents and chimney flues — all share one job: moving air or combustion gases safely from one place to another.
