Two households can run the same number of loads a week and one of them has a dryer vent that needs clearing twice as often. The difference is almost never the dryer. It is the duct: how far the air has to travel, how many corners it turns, and what the duct is made of. Here is how to read your own run, whether you are in McHenry or anywhere else in the county.
Why the route matters more than the machine
A dryer pushes hot, wet, lint-laden air out with a fixed amount of force. Every foot of duct and every corner takes some of that force away. When the air slows down, the lint it is carrying stops being carried and settles, usually just past a bend. That settled lint narrows the duct, which slows the air further, and the cycle accelerates. A long run with several elbows does not get gradually dirtier — it gets dirtier at an increasing rate.
How to assess your own run
- Total length. Pace from the back of the dryer to the exterior hood. Manufacturers publish a maximum length for each model, and every elbow counts as a substantial length penalty on top of the straight footage.
- Number of turns. Count them, including the one immediately behind the dryer. Two is common, four is a problem.
- Material. Rigid metal is smooth. Flexible foil or plastic accordion duct has ridges that catch lint at every corrugation, and it is not accepted for concealed runs.
- The crushed section. Look behind the dryer. Flexible duct squashed flat when the machine was pushed back into place is the single most common restriction we find.
- The termination. Outside, the hood flap should swing open freely when the dryer runs and close when it stops.
The layouts that give the most trouble
Interior laundry rooms are the hard case — a second-floor or center-of-house laundry can mean twenty-plus feet of concealed duct with multiple turns before it reaches an outside wall. Basement laundries that vent up and over joists come second. A garage-wall termination with a screened cover is another: screens are the wrong thing on a dryer termination, because lint mats across the mesh within weeks.
What you can do and what needs equipment
You can clean the lint screen every load, vacuum the screen housing, pull the dryer out and check the connector for crushing, and confirm the exterior flap moves. What you cannot do from either end is clear a concealed twenty-foot run with turns in it — that requires rotary brushing the full length with airflow verified afterward, which is what dryer vent cleaning covers. Some routes are worth re-routing rather than cleaning more often, and we will say so if yours is one of them.
The signs that say do it now
Clothes needing two cycles, a dryer hot to the touch, a burning smell, the laundry room feeling humid, or no visible exhaust at the outside hood while the machine is running. Lint is combustible and a restricted duct traps heat with it, which is why this is a safety item and not merely an efficiency one. How long is too long for a dryer vent?
Your dryer’s manual states a maximum equivalent length, and each elbow subtracts meaningfully from it. Check the manual against your actual run before assuming it is fine.
Does flexible foil duct really matter?
Yes. Its ridged interior catches lint that a smooth rigid duct carries out, and it crushes easily behind the machine. Rigid metal is the better material.
How often should a vent be cleaned?
Once a year for a typical household, and more often for a long run, a large family, or a home with pets that shed.
Can I clean it myself with a kit?
Short straight runs, sometimes. Concealed runs with several turns need rotary equipment and an airflow check afterward to confirm the duct is actually clear.
Why does my dryer take two cycles?
Restricted airflow is the usual cause. The machine cannot move moisture out, so it runs hot and long without drying.
Should there be a screen on the outside vent?
No. Screens and mesh trap lint at the termination and clog quickly. A proper flapper hood is the correct fitting.
Is a dryer vent related to chimney work?
It is the same skill set: a duct carrying hot air through a building, and a blockage in it is a fire risk. We service both.
Do gas and electric dryers differ here?
Both need clear venting, and a gas dryer adds combustion byproducts to the exhaust, which makes an unobstructed duct more critical still.
