If you have small kids or pets and a fireplace, the two things that matter most are a physical barrier the child cannot move and a hearth that stays clear of anything flammable. Everything else on this page is detail around those two ideas. We have been sweeping and inspecting fireplaces in McHenry County for 29 years, and the burns and near-misses homeowners tell us about almost always trace back to one of them being missing.
Gas fireplace glass is the hazard people underestimate
The glass front on a direct-vent gas fireplace gets hot enough to cause a serious burn on contact, and it stays hot long after the burner shuts off. A toddler steadying themselves on the glass is the most common way this happens.
Since 2015, new vented gas fireplaces have shipped with a factory barrier screen that mounts in front of the glass. If your unit predates that and has bare glass, the manufacturer almost certainly sells a retrofit screen for your model — bring us the model number off the rating plate inside the lower louver and we will look it up during a gas fireplace service visit. Do not substitute a decorative mesh panel that touches the glass; the point of the barrier is the air gap behind it.
Wood fireplaces: a screen is not a gate
A spark screen stops embers. It does not stop a determined two-year-old. If you have a crawler or a new walker, you want a freestanding hearth gate that anchors to the wall and surrounds the whole hearth extension, not just the opening.
Set the gate so there is room for the door or screen to swing without pinning anyone against it, and check that the gate frame itself is metal rather than a plastic pressure-mount panel — plastic softens near radiant heat. Rounded hearth-edge padding is worth adding too; in our experience the raised brick edge causes more household injuries than the fire ever does.
Keep the hearth extension clear, all season
The hearth extension exists to catch rolling embers and shield the floor from radiant heat, so it needs to stay empty. Toy bins, dog beds, throw blankets, and the basket of kindling all migrate onto it over a long winter.
Give the fire three feet of clear space in every direction, including above the mantel — stockings, garland, and a low-hung TV all sit inside that zone in a lot of Cary living rooms. If your mantel gets uncomfortably warm to the touch during a normal fire, that is a signal worth mentioning to us; it sometimes points to a fireplace opening that is oversized for the flue.
Tools, wood, and ash storage
Store the poker set out of a child’s reach and keep ash in a metal container with a lid, on a noncombustible floor, away from the house. Ash holds live coals for days, which is exactly how a garage fire starts after a homeowner empties the firebox into a plastic bin.
Split wood belongs outside and off the ground. Bringing in a week’s supply invites insects and, in a house with a dog, creates a chew pile right next to the fire.
Pets need a slightly different plan
Cats seek out warm surfaces and will settle on a hearth close enough to singe whiskers; dogs knock over tool sets and screens with their tails. A gate solves both.
Set the rule before the first fire of the season
Kids follow one clear rule better than five. In our house the rule was simple: nobody touches the fireplace, the glass, or the tools without a grown-up standing there. Say it out loud before the first fire in October, not in December after a scare.
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms the same evening. Illinois requires carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas, and a fireplace household should treat that as a floor, not a ceiling.
Where a sweep visit fits
Barriers protect against contact burns. A chimney inspection protects against everything happening inside the wall — creosote, a cracked flue tile, a blocked cap. Families in Cary can book both in one visit; see our chimney sweep service in Cary for what a typical appointment covers, or browse the full list of chimney services. We are insured and bonded, we quote the price up front before any work starts, and you can reach us at (815) 320-0883 seven days a week, 7 AM to 7 PM.
Frequently asked questions
How hot does gas fireplace glass actually get?
Hot enough to burn skin on contact within a second, and it stays dangerous for a long stretch after the burner is off. Treat the glass as hot from the moment you light it until the unit has been cold for an hour.
Is a barrier screen required on my older gas fireplace?
Units sold before 2015 were not required to ship with one, so plenty of Cary homes have bare glass. Most manufacturers sell a model-specific retrofit screen, and fitting one is straightforward.
What kind of gate works around a raised hearth?
A hardware-mounted metal gate that anchors into studs and encloses the entire hearth extension. Pressure-mounted plastic gates are not designed for heat or for being leaned on.
How far should furniture sit from a working fireplace?
Three feet of clear space in front and to the sides is the working rule for combustibles. Check the mantel zone as well, since decorations and electronics creep into it.
Can I mount a TV above my fireplace?
Only if the mantel shelf and the mounting height keep the TV out of the heat plume; many fireplaces throw more heat up the face than a mount can tolerate. Feel the wall above the mantel after an hour-long fire before committing.
How should I dispose of fireplace ash with kids in the house?
Scoop into a lidded metal ash bucket, carry it outside immediately, and set it on concrete or bare soil away from the house and deck for several days before disposal. Never use paper, plastic, or a shop vacuum.
Do pets make duct cleaning more urgent?
They add hair and dander to the return air, which loads filters and settles in the ducts faster. Households with shedding pets tend to notice the difference sooner; our pricing for duct work is listed on the pricing page.
What can I check myself between professional visits?
Damper operation, a clear hearth, tested alarms, and a quick look at the cap from the ground with binoculars. Our DIY chimney care guide walks through what is safe to do yourself and what should wait for a sweep.
