Most homeowners think of a dryer vent as a laundry-room chore, not a combustion appliance. If your dryer runs on natural gas, it is both. The vent carries lint and moisture out of the house the same way an electric dryer does, but it also carries the products of a burner running inside the cabinet. That second job is the reason a gas dryer vent deserves a closer look before the heating season settles over McHenry County.
Does a gas dryer need the vent cleaned more often than an electric one?
Not necessarily more often, but the consequences of neglect are higher. Both dryer types load the duct with lint at roughly the same rate, and both should be cleaned about once a year in a normal household. The difference is what happens when the duct blocks: an electric dryer overheats, while a gas dryer overheats and can spill combustion gases into the laundry room.
What a gas dryer adds: combustion byproducts
A gas dryer burns fuel to make heat, and the exhaust from that burner leaves through the same duct as the humid air from your clothes. When lint chokes the run, back pressure builds in the cabinet, the burner cannot breathe properly, and incomplete combustion becomes possible. That is how carbon monoxide gets into a laundry room. A working CO alarm on the same level as the dryer is not optional in a gas-dryer home, and it is not a substitute for an open duct.
Signs the vent is restricted
The clearest sign is drying time. If a normal load now takes two cycles, the duct is telling you something. Other things we hear about from homeowners around Huntley: the laundry room feels humid or smells hot, the top of the dryer is uncomfortably warm to touch, the outside hood flap barely lifts while the machine runs, or lint is visible around the termination. On the Del Webb-era ranch homes on the south side of the village, the run is often short and simple; in the two-story subdivisions off Route 47, the duct frequently climbs through a wall cavity and travels a long way before it reaches daylight. Long runs clog sooner.
How the run should be built
Rigid metal duct, as short and as straight as the layout allows, joined with foil tape rather than screws, terminating outdoors through a hood with a working damper. Screws that project into the duct catch lint and build a plug at every joint. Flexible plastic or foil accordion hose behind the machine is the other common problem, because the ridges hold lint and the hose crushes when the dryer is pushed back against the wall. A vent must never terminate in an attic, crawl space or garage.
What a visit looks like
We disconnect the machine, clean the full run with rotary brushes from both ends, clear the termination hood, check the damper swings, and reconnect and test airflow so you can see the difference. On a gas dryer we also check that the transition hose is metal, that nothing is crushed behind the cabinet, and that the burner exhaust is going where it should. Our rates are posted on our pricing page, and we quote up front before we start.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell whether my dryer is gas or electric?
Look behind the machine. A gas dryer has a black iron pipe with a shutoff valve running to it and usually plugs into an ordinary 120-volt outlet. An electric dryer has no gas line and uses a large three- or four-prong 240-volt plug.
How often should a gas dryer vent be cleaned?
About once a year for a typical household. Large families, pet bedding, long duct runs and homes that dry several loads a day are better served every six to nine months.
Can a blocked dryer vent really produce carbon monoxide?
Yes, on a gas dryer. Restricted exhaust interferes with combustion and can push burner gases back into the room. Keep a carbon monoxide alarm on the same level as the laundry and test it monthly.
Is the lint screen enough if I clean it every load?
No. The screen catches a portion of the lint; the rest travels into the duct and settles along the walls, at every elbow and at the outside hood. That is the part you cannot reach from the laundry room.
Why does my dryer shut off before the clothes are dry?
Many machines have a thermal cut-off that trips when exhaust temperature climbs too high. A restricted vent is the most common cause. Repeated tripping eventually kills the cut-off switch and the heating element.
Can I vent a gas dryer into the garage to keep the heat?
No. A dryer must terminate outdoors. Venting into a garage, attic, crawl space or basement dumps moisture, lint and burner exhaust into the building, which invites mould and creates a carbon monoxide hazard.
Does a longer vent run need anything special?
It needs to stay within the length the dryer manufacturer allows, and every elbow counts against that budget. Where a long run cannot be avoided, rigid metal duct and annual cleaning matter more, not less.
