Every autumn the same thing happens. The furnace runs for the first time in months, and within a day the house smells faintly of dust and everyone with allergies notices. In a home with pets it is more pronounced, and the ductwork is usually where the story starts. We hear about it constantly from Crystal Lake homeowners in the first cold week of the season.
What actually accumulates in there
Return ducts pull air out of the living space and carry whatever is floating in it. In a house with a dog or a cat that means hair and dander, plus ordinary skin cells, textile fibres, pollen tracked in from the yard, and construction dust that has been circulating since whenever the last project happened. Most of it is caught by the filter. What gets past settles on duct walls, and it sits there through the summer while the system is idle.
Why the first furnace run is the worst
Months of still air let everything settle. The first time the blower comes on at pressure, some of that settled material lifts and moves. This is also why a dusty burner and a dusty heat exchanger produce that distinctive smell during the first heating cycle — largely dust burning off, which usually fades within a day or two. If it does not fade, that is worth a call to your heating contractor.
What duct cleaning does and does not do
Being straight about this matters. Duct cleaning removes accumulated debris from the supply and return runs and the registers. It is worthwhile when there is visible buildup, after a remodel, after water damage, when there has been a rodent or insect problem, or in a heavy-shedding pet household where the returns are visibly loaded. It is not a treatment for allergies, and it is not something a typical home needs every year. Anyone promising a cure is overselling. The cheaper things first
Change the furnace filter, and change it more often than the box says if you have pets — a loaded filter stops filtering and starts restricting airflow. Vacuum floor registers. Keep return grilles clear of furniture. Run the fan on circulate occasionally rather than only on demand. These cost almost nothing and solve a fair share of the complaints we get called about.
Do not forget the dryer

How often should ducts be cleaned in a home with pets?
There is no fixed interval. Judge by condition — visible buildup at the returns, debris blowing from registers, or a recent remodel are better signals than the calendar.
Will duct cleaning help my allergies?
It can reduce circulating debris, but it is not an allergy treatment and should not be sold as one. Filtration and source control usually matter more.
Why does the house smell when the furnace first starts?
Mostly dust burning off warm surfaces. It should fade within a day or two; a smell that persists needs a heating contractor.
How often should I change the filter with pets?
