Why does timing matter for a chimney sweep?
Timing matters because a sweep is not always the end of the job. If we open the flue and find a cracked liner, a failed crown, or mortar that has washed out, that repair needs dry weather and a clear stretch of days. In August you have both. In November you have neither, and the work either waits until spring or gets done in conditions nobody would choose.

What we actually do on the visit
A standard visit is a full sweep of the flue with the fireplace opening sealed and a HEPA vacuum running the whole time, followed by a Level 1 inspection of everything we can reach and see. We brush the flue from top to bottom, clear the smoke shelf and firebox, check the damper, and look over the cap, crown, and visible masonry. The Cary housing stock, and what we tend to find
Cary has a wide spread of ages in its homes, and the age of the chimney usually predicts the problem. Newer houses tend to have factory-built fireplaces where the issue is a worn gasket, a rusted cap, or a chase cover holding water. Older masonry stacks bring clay tile that has taken forty winters of freeze and thaw. Neither is cause for alarm on its own. Both are much cheaper to deal with in August than after water has had another winter to work.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a chimney be swept?
Once a year for an inspection, and swept whenever the buildup warrants it. A fireplace used most winter evenings will usually need sweeping annually; one used a handful of times may not.
Is it really cheaper to book in summer?
The sweep itself is the same published price year round. What summer saves you is the cost of a repair discovered too late to do properly, and the delay of waiting for a slot in peak season.
Do I need to be home during the appointment?
Yes, someone should be there. We need interior access to the fireplace, and we walk you through what we found before we leave.
Will sweeping make a mess in my living room?
It should not. We seal the fireplace opening and run a HEPA vacuum for the whole sweep, and we lay down protection on the floor and hearth.
How long does a sweep and inspection take?
Most take between an hour and 90 minutes. A second flue, difficult roof access, or heavy buildup adds time.
My fireplace is gas. Does it still need attention?
Yes, though the work is different. A gas appliance needs its venting checked and the burner and safety controls serviced rather than brushed. That is covered under gas fireplace service.
