A blocked dryer vent almost never announces itself. It creeps up over a couple of years as the duct narrows with lint, and the household adapts without noticing — two cycles instead of one, a warmer laundry room, a dryer that seems to be getting old. Those are not signs of an aging appliance. They are signs of a duct that cannot breathe. Here is what to watch for in your McHenry home.
What are the warning signs of a clogged dryer vent?
The clearest sign is drying time. If a normal load needs more than one cycle, the moist air is not getting out of the house. Alongside that, watch for these:
- Clothes that come out hot to the touch but still damp.
- The laundry room feeling humid or noticeably warm during a cycle.
- A burning or scorched smell while the dryer runs.
- Lint collecting around the door seal or on the floor behind the machine.

Lint is dry, fine, and highly combustible, and a restricted duct traps heat against it. The secondary costs are real too: a dryer working against a blockage runs longer, uses more energy, and wears out its heating element and motor years early.

Can I clean the vent myself?
A short, straight run to an exterior wall is within reach of a homeowner brush kit. Long runs, roof terminations, and multiple elbows are not, and a brush head lost in a duct is a worse problem than the lint.
Is a vent cleaning the same as an air duct cleaning?
No. The dryer vent is the exhaust from one appliance. Air ducts are the heating and cooling distribution system for the whole house. They are separate services.
